Cumberland VINE Inmate Coverage
Virginia VINE covers all local and regional jails in the Commonwealth, including Piedmont Regional Jail. That matters in Cumberland because PRJ is the adult custody facility serving the county. The Cumberland Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Darrell Hodges, makes arrests and transports people, but there is no separate Cumberland adult jail roster. Search for the PRJ-contributed record when the person was held on a Cumberland matter.
VINE is free and available around the clock. A public status search can be made without opening an account. Its jail feed can report release, transfer, escape and return, or death. Each event has a distinct meaning. Work release is also not full release because the participant returns to custody. The agency named on the matching record defines the scope of the result.
State-prison notification is now separate. VADOC uses NAAVI for eligible crime victims, while public users can check the VADOC locator. Federal Bureau of Prisons and immigration records are outside Virginia VINE. A person’s route can therefore cross more than one system after leaving PRJ.
Search One Cumberland Inmate With VINE
Use the VINELink People search for one specific person. Gather the full legal name and any known identification number first. Similar names are common, so do not select a result on name alone. If the custody event was local, the contributing agency should be Piedmont Regional Jail. The official PRJ offender lookup can test whether the person is still shown in current custody. If another agency appears, stop and identify why before drawing a conclusion.
- Open VINELink and select Virginia, then choose the People search.
- Enter the person’s name or available ID. Try a careful spelling variation only when needed.
- Compare each possible match by agency, identifier, age details, and custody context.
- Open the PRJ-contributed record and note the exact status, event date if shown, and agency.
- Use “Get Notification” on that individual record if a future custody change matters.
A missing result is weaker than a matching Out of Custody record. Spelling, feed timing, transfer, and retention can explain an absence. The full Cumberland County release search adds PRJ, court, VADOC, and federal checks when VINE alone cannot resolve the person’s destination.

Cumberland VINE Release Fields
The precise fields depend on the data supplied by PRJ. Virginia’s public material does not promise that every released result will retain a reason or date for a set period. Read only what the live record states. Do not turn a blank field into an assumed bond, sentence completion, or discharge.

“Out of Custody” ordinarily means that the person left PRJ’s custody episode. It does not state, by itself, where the person went. Compare VADOC when a state transfer is possible. For a federal route, search the BOP locator and court docket. If immigration detention is plausible, the ICE locator has different rules and a limited window for some recent releases.
Register Cumberland VINE Release Alerts
Register before the expected event when notice matters. On the matching record, choose “Get Notification,” then select an available delivery method. Virginia VINE can use phone, text, email, TTY, or in-app notice. More than one contact point may be registered when the interface permits. Registration is confidential, and the person in custody does not need to know who registered.
- Open the correct PRJ record and select “Get Notification.”
- Choose phone, text, email, TTY, or an available in-app method.
- Enter the contact point carefully. For telephone alerts, create and save a private PIN.
- Complete any account confirmation sent by text or email. That code is not the phone PIN.
- When an automated call arrives, enter the PIN to acknowledge it and stop repeat calls.
If a call is unanswered, VINE may leave a message and retry until the PIN is entered or the retry period ends. If the phone PIN is lost, call Virginia VINE at 800-467-4943 and choose operator help. Cumberland VINE and NAAVI Split
Virginia’s local-jail VINE and state-prison NAAVI systems do not share a registration. A VINE enrollment tied to a Piedmont Regional Jail record will not carry forward if VADOC assumes custody. Eligible victims must register separately through NAAVI for state-prison notifications. NAAVI is a closed victim system, not an open public inmate search.
Public users who are not eligible for NAAVI can use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. It covers people in VADOC custody or under state supervision and updates daily. Search by the first three letters of the first name plus the complete last name, or by a seven-digit VADOC number. A supervised person may remain visible after leaving prison.

That separation is the key follow-up after a PRJ transfer notice: identify the new custodian, then enroll or search in the system that covers it.
Note: A VADOC advanced-release notice describes an anticipated event and can change; later agency records should confirm the completed release.
Cumberland VINE Custody Boundaries
A single Cumberland case can move through several custodians. The Sheriff may make the arrest, Piedmont Regional Jail may hold the person, and VADOC may later receive a sentenced prisoner. PRJ also contracts beds to the U.S. Marshals Service. Each handoff can end one agency’s visible custody record while another one begins. That is why the agency field in a VINE result is as important as the words “Out of Custody.”
For a person still displayed in PRJ custody, the live JailTracker answers the narrow current-jail question. VINE adds a status check and future event alert for that same local record. If the person is later shown at a VADOC institution or district, use the state locator to interpret prison custody or community supervision. A BOP result marked Released means only that the person is no longer in BOP custody. USMS has no matching historical public locator, and an ICE no-result can be inconclusive.

Keep the custody sequence in order: arrest, PRJ booking, exit or transfer, receiving agency, then any supervision. That sequence prevents a VINE event from being stretched beyond the system that reported it.
Confirm Cumberland VINE Release Results
VINE is a notification service, not a certified release record. Feed delays can occur. A status may omit the reason for exit, and released-result retention is not guaranteed. After an alert, call Piedmont Regional Jail at 434-392-1601 for operational confirmation. When durable proof is needed, request the existing cumulative booking and release entry with the actual date, time, category, and any transfer indicator. Court records can explain a bond order, dismissal, sentence, or other authority, but the court timestamp may precede physical exit. PRJ’s release rules and another agency’s hold can affect processing. A court order and an Out of Custody status together are stronger than either alone, while the PRJ release entry remains the best local record of the completed custody event.
For state custody, the VADOC locator can show a location or release-related date while the person remains within custody or supervision. Fully discharged people are not promised as a permanent public archive. Federal BOP records, USMS files, and ICE data each answer narrower questions. Never treat a Cumberland VINE result as a universal search across those systems.
Cumberland Notification Event Boundaries
Virginia law separately requires certain advance notice to a requesting victim when a local prisoner has a sentence longer than 30 days. Virginia Code section 53.1-133.02 generally calls for notice at least 15 days before release or discharge and notice as soon as practical after listed events. That legal duty is distinct from the public VINELink search and its automated delivery choices.
The Virginia State Police registry is also separate. It applies only to people required to register for qualifying offenses. Its community-status and address tools cannot stand in for a general Cumberland release alert. A registry appearance can coexist with supervision, but it does not explain when or why a PRJ custody event ended.
A reliable notification plan names the person, the current custodian, and the next likely system. Use VINE for the PRJ event. Shift to NAAVI only when eligible and VADOC takes custody. Use direct agency records to settle the actual release time and destination.
