Cumberland Parole and Probation Defined

A person released in Cumberland County may remain under rules imposed by a court or the Virginia Parole Board. Parole is conditional release from a prison sentence under Board authority. Probation is supervision ordered by a court, often with some or all jail or prison time suspended. Virginia ended ordinary discretionary parole for most felonies committed on or after January 1, 1995, but statutory exceptions remain. Probation is still common. The offense date, sentence, and court order therefore matter more than a guess based on when the person left custody.

Pretrial supervision is different again. Cumberland participates in the service area of Piedmont Court Services. Someone on pretrial supervision has left jail while a charge remains pending. That person has not been acquitted and has not completed a sentence merely because the jail roster no longer shows the booking. Local probation through Piedmont Court Services also differs from state felony parole or probation administered by the Virginia Department of Corrections. The Cumberland Combined District Court is the local source for misdemeanor and preliminary-hearing records.

Discharge

The formal end of the supervision term, not just release from a jail or prison.

Absconder

A person alleged to have stopped reporting or whose location is unknown to the supervising agency.

Revocation

A court or Board action that can change supervision after an alleged violation.

Detainer

A request or hold that may send a person to another custodian instead of the community.

Verify Cumberland Post-Release Supervision

Start with the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator when state parole or probation is possible. Search with the first three letters of the first name and the complete last name, or use the seven-digit VADOC number. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. The service updates daily and warns that information can be wrong or stale, so match identifiers and preserve the date of the check.

A community-supervised result can show that the person left confinement while remaining under VADOC authority. Its location may identify the responsible district. No result is not proof of discharge because the public locator is not documented as a complete archive of inactive records. For local probation or pretrial status, use the Cumberland court case and Piedmont Court Services rather than assuming VADOC holds the file.

1. Identify the court, case, offense date, and whether the last custodian was Piedmont Regional Jail or VADOC.
2. Search the VADOC locator and match more than the name. Record the displayed status, location, date field, and access date.
3. Read the Cumberland court disposition or obtain the actual order. Look for probation, suspended time, or a pending pretrial term.
4. Contact the office named by the record. District 24 is the Cumberland-area state office, but another district may supervise a person who lives elsewhere.
5. Ask for the narrow fact needed. A full state supervision file is not generally open under Virginia Code section 2.2-3706(B)(6).

Note: A VADOC district listing supports current state supervision, but the assigned office may be outside Farmville if the person reports elsewhere.

Cumberland Supervision Offices Differ

Cumberland’s state supervision office is VADOC Probation and Parole District 24 in Farmville. District 24 serves Cumberland along with Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, and Prince Edward counties. The directory identifies Ashley Morgello as chief. This office handles state community supervision, but the live VADOC record should control when it assigns a different district.

Piedmont Court Services is a separate local program. It provides local probation across several counties and pretrial services for Cumberland. Calling the wrong Farmville office can produce a false dead end because each agency has a different legal role and record system.

The directory is the right place to confirm the state office before relying on an old address or a general jail listing.

Cumberland Parole Hearing Records

The Virginia Parole Board public-meetings page posts upcoming agendas and past minutes. Its schedule is event-based, not a fixed weekly calendar. Since July 1, 2024, final deliberation and voting on an intended discretionary-parole or geriatric-release grant occur in public meetings. An agenda is posted at least three working days before such a meeting. Not every eligible person appears, so absence from an agenda does not prove that no review occurred.

Monthly decision PDFs appear on the Board’s parole reports page. Match the name with offense, jurisdiction, sentence, and report month. The reports can state granted or denied, individualized reasons, the final vote, and member names. A grant starts further notice and release-setting work. It does not establish the actual exit timestamp, and Virginia law generally prevents VADOC from setting release earlier than the required notice period permits.

The Board’s public page and Virginia Code describe publication timing in different terms. The site says reports are delayed until the end of the following month for required notices, while section 53.1-136 refers to publication by the fifteenth day for the prior month. Treat either source as a delayed decision record, not a real-time custody feed.

After a reported grant, the VADOC release letter and later supervisee record supply stronger evidence of physical release and the assigned district.

Cumberland Supervision Violations and Discharge

Conditions depend on the actual order. They may regulate reporting, travel, programs, or other conduct, but a public summary should not replace the signed conditions. An alleged violation may lead to a warrant, a hearing, changed terms, or revocation. An absconder status means alleged noncompliance or inability to locate the supervisee. It does not mean the supervision term ended.

No official Cumberland-specific absconder or warrant list was found. Verify a warrant through the court or the proper law-enforcement channel. The Cumberland Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Darrell Hodges, handles law-enforcement functions but does not publish a county absconder list. Old jail entries and social posts are not sound proof. Virginia VINE tracks custody events from a participating jail, not each act in a probation case. A return-to-custody alert may help establish a new jail event, but the court or Board record explains the legal action.

Supervision ends through formal discharge, expiration, or another authorized order. A person who has finished all state supervision may disappear from the public VADOC locator because it is built for people currently in custody or under supervision. Use the discharge paper, release packet, or an authorized records route when proof of the completed term is needed. The Cumberland Circuit Court is the record source for felony disposition and sentencing orders.

Note: A missing supervisee result is not proof of discharge, just as a missing jail entry is not proof of community release.

Cumberland Reentry After Release

Piedmont Regional Jail has reported a Successful Living program and a Re-Entry Counselor through its official news and program posts. VACARES also lists LOC Family Services in Farmville as a reentry contact. These are useful local leads because many Cumberland custody and supervision services sit in Farmville rather than at the Cumberland courthouse.

Program availability and eligibility can change. Contact the provider before relying on a listing. A program reference does not prove that a named person was released, is enrolled, or has any particular supervision condition. Verification still comes from the release record, court order, and supervising agency. This distinction keeps support navigation separate from status evidence. It also prevents a Farmville service listing from being mistaken for a Cumberland parole or probation record.

For a person returning from PRJ, the reentry contact may be different from the officer who oversees local probation or state supervision. Ask what service is offered, what area is served, and whether a referral is required. Do not send private case details until the provider confirms that it is the right recipient.

Cumberland Release Property and Records

VADOC’s facility-release process says a person leaving a state institution receives the property envelope, identity papers and documents, other property, and release paperwork. The person reads or is read the applicable order and conditions, then signs with a witness. That packet can identify whether the release is discharge, parole, or probation and can name obligations more precisely than a public search result.

When no detainer applies, the VADOC business office supplements available offender pay to a minimum of $25 and arranges a bus when needed. Those are state-facility rules. They are not promises about a release from Piedmont Regional Jail. PRJ has not published an equivalent property-return or transportation rule for Cumberland detainees, so direct confirmation is needed.

VADOC Operating Procedure 050.6 also provides a written correction path for wrong official-record data. A request begins with the facility unit and includes escalation routes. That process matters when a public supervision result conflicts with release papers. Keep the record, note when the locator was accessed, and describe the claimed error with care.
